Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…there was this commercial. The child asks the wise old owl, “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Lollipop?” The owl responds, “One…..(lick)…Two….(lick)….Three…..(CRUNCH!). It takes three licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll lollipop.” [Youtube video]
Is life supposed to be one of impulse and quick satisfaction? Or, is life to be slow and lingering? Is it better to bite the lollipop and chew up the Tootsie roll center or go at it slowly?
Arguments can be made for both. I can see going at something with gusto, digging in and getting dirty. But I also see the value in slow, deliberate actions. Bungee jumping vs. Bonsai trees. The point is not to bite the lollipop absentmindedly, but deliberately. If you savor the 3 licks and bite with focused interest, it works. If you just stick the sucker in your cheek and forget it until you feel the soft Tootsie roll center, what was the point?
Pay attention. Enjoy. Savor.
Hey where’s the cloths on that kid in the video? LOL
