Have humans always made music? Did women in ancient times sing lullabyes to their babies? I am not a great singer, I would never do karaoke and I play no instruments. I love music. All kinds of music. I love classical symphonies. I can listen to all the different sections in an orchestra. I love jazz and swing and big band like Count Basie, Mile Davis and Ella Fitzgerald. I also like heavy metal and rap. My taste is eclectic and bizarre. My parents are children on the 40’s and 50’s. They grew up listening to Deep South radio with black singing groups. The danced the jitter bug in our dining room. My mom loved Tom Jones and Liberace (go figure)? My oldest sister listened to The Who and Zepplin and when she was in high school, Tommy was the popular movie. My middle sister was in high school during the disco era and Saturday Night Fever was her generation’s movie musis. I saw Flash Dance about 13 time in high school. I also skipped school with friends to see Purle Rain. I have vivid memories of driving home from the beach, sunburned and listening to Boston. I saw Duran Duran in concert my senior year in high school. I saw Sting on his first solo tour at Merriweather Post Pavillion as a freshman in college. Chaka Khan performed Spring Fling and The Ramones literally played in the college cafeteria. I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform at Poseurs in Georgetown wearing only tube socks. I saw Luther Vandross three times. I saw the Rolling Stones perform at the Orange Bowl. Living Color opened for them and blew the stadium away. I like Harry Connick, Run DMC, Rick Martin, The Beasties Boys, Metallica, The Dixie Chicks and Bruce Sprinsteen.  Two years ago I took my two sons to see U2 in concert. I am working on compiling an anthology of music that encompasses my childhood. I have great flashes of driving on the George Washington parkway listening to the Judy Bats and the Spin Doctors. I listened to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians every night while studying my first year of medical school. Simply Red reminds me of how long I have really loved my husband. Currently, I am listening to Corrine Bailey Rae. Her voice is sexy and her lyrics are delicious.
